In the Hugelkultur method, large pieces of wood are laid at the bottom of the garden bed as they will take the longest time to decompose. Smaller pieces are placed on top of the larger pieces to fill space, such as branches and sticks, and then filled with grass clippings, leaves and kitchen scraps, while compost and topsoil consist of the top two layers.
